When you volunteer at Reading Partners, you'll work one-on-one with a child who has fallen behind in reading.
* Each tutoring session is 45 minutes.
* Volunteers can tutor once a week or twice a week. (Children are tutored twice a week.)
* Volunteers can tutor one child or several. (Some tutors tutor several children in back-to-back
sessions.)
* Tutoring takes place on the campuses of local schools that have a relationship with Reading Partners.
After you've had training and been matched with a child, you will start tutoring. As a Tutor, You Will:
* encourage your student,
* build a trusting, positive relationship and
* inspire your student's excitement about reading, learning and the world.
Requirements
Who can volunteer?
Almost anyone! As long as you are high school aged or older, speak fluent English, and do not have a criminal
record, you can volunteer as a Reading Partners tutor.
Do I have to be an American citizen to volunteer?
No, you do not have to be an American citizen to volunteer; however, it is required that you are fluent in the
English language.
Do I need to have teaching experience to volunteer?
No experience is required. In fact, 70% of our volunteers have no previous teaching experience. Of course, if
you have a teaching background, we welcome and value your experience.
Is there training?
Yes. To get started you will participate in a new tutor orientation (90minutes) that will introduce you to the
Reading Partners program, best teaching practices, and our unique curriculum. In addition, on your first day
of tutoring you will be given one-on-one training, which usually includes shadowing another volunteer who is
tutoring a student.
